Up to half of all women experience weakness in both their abdominal and pelvic floor muscles after pregnancy. Around one in three still have a tummy gap at eight weeks post-birth. This lack of core strength and stability can lead to back or pelvic pain, bladder or bowel problems, and even sexual dysfunction.
These are not symptoms you simply have to put up with after having a baby. With the right support and rehabilitation, you can restore strength, function, and confidence in your body—whether you are 6 weeks or several years postnatal.
What is a Mummy MOT
This post natal Mummy check is a specialist assessment designed to evaluate your abdominal and pelvic floor muscles, and to guide your recovery safely. It’s recommended for women at around 6–8 weeks postnatal, but it’s equally beneficial for those years after giving birth who may still have a tummy gap, weakness, or pelvic floor issues.
Having qualified with Mummy MOT® in 2019 and also having worked with the Mummy MOT HQ I have gained valuable experience over the past 6 years working within this field. This experience gave me a strong foundation in postnatal care, which I now use to provide personalised, evidence-based support for all my clients.
A Mummy MOT begins with a detailed discussion about your concerns, symptoms, and goals. This is followed by a full-body assessment, looking at posture, core strength, the spine, pelvis, and abdominal muscles. With your consent, an internal vaginal examination may be included to check pelvic floor function.
Treatment may involve hands-on techniques to release tension and support recovery, and you’ll also receive a personalised exercise plan sent to you by email to guide your progress at home.
The number of sessions really depends on what we find during your initial assessment and what your individual goals are. For some women, a Mummy MOT is a one-off check to see how things are healing and recovering after birth. For others, especially if there are concerns with core or pelvic floor function, we may recommend follow-up sessions.
This might include checking progress before returning to higher-impact activities or providing extra support and rehabilitation that isn’t easily available elsewhere.
Wear comfortable clothing you can move in, with leggings or a skirt easiest to remove if needed. If an internal exam is appropriate, it will always be discussed first and only carried out with your full consent. Bring scan results or a referral if requested, and feel free to note down any questions you’d like to cover.
Health insurance companies do not cover Mummy MOTs as they are a 1 hour appointment. They may cover a women’s health appointment, however this will only be a 30 minute appointment.
