Shockwave Therapy for Plantar Fasciitis and Achilles Tendinopathy

If you’ve been struggling with heel or Achilles pain that won’t settle, even after rest, stretching or orthotics, shockwave therapy could be the next step.

At Marni Cochrane Physiotherapy, we use radial extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) to help reduce pain and stimulate healing in stubborn tendon problems, particularly plantar fasciitis and Achilles tendinopathy. This non-invasive treatment works by sending pulses of energy into the affected area to improve blood flow, encourage repair and get you moving more comfortably again.

How it works

Shockwave therapy triggers a natural healing response within the tissue and helps remodel the tendon. Each session at our clinic lasts around 30 minutes, combining use of the machine with progressive loading and strengthening exercises. This balance is vital – shockwave alone often isn’t enough. We focus on making sure you are building strength alongside your treatment, which is key to lasting recovery.

Conditions we treat

Plantar fasciitis causes pain under the heel or along the arch of the foot and develops when the fascia becomes overloaded. Shockwave therapy helps by increasing circulation and stimulating healing in the affected tissue, allowing pain to ease and movement to improve.

Achilles tendinopathy often affects runners or those who have recently increased their activity levels. It occurs when the tendon struggles to cope with load, leading to stiffness and pain. Shockwave therapy encourages tendon repair and, when paired with a strengthening plan, helps restore function and reduce symptoms.

Our approach

All three of our physiotherapists – Marni, Kate and Matt – are fully qualified in using radial shockwave therapy. We take pride in combining this technology with a personalised rehab plan to ensure the best outcomes. Many patients come to us after other treatments have failed, and this combined approach is often what makes the difference.
