Why Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy Matters for Both Women and Men

I am Marni, Clinic Director and Specialist Physiotherapist based in Bishop’s Stortford. With almost 20 years of experience across the NHS, private practice, elite sport and pelvic health, I have treated hundreds of people facing symptoms they often feel too embarrassed to talk about. Pelvic floor problems can affect anyone, but they are highly treatable with the right approach.

At the clinic, we offer expert pelvic health physiotherapy for both women and men. Whether you are struggling with leaking, pelvic pain or discomfort after surgery, you do not have to manage it alone. There is help available, and it starts with understanding what is going on.

What is pelvic floor physiotherapy?

The pelvic floor is a group of muscles that support your bladder, bowel and reproductive organs. If these muscles are too weak, too tight or not coordinating properly, you might notice symptoms that disrupt everyday life.

Pelvic floor physiotherapy is designed to restore the function of these muscles. It can help you feel more in control, more comfortable and more confident. At the clinic, we offer private and sensitive assessments to find the root of the problem and guide your recovery.

For women: support through all stages

Pelvic floor problems are common during and after pregnancy, after gynaecological surgery, or during hormonal changes such as menopause. Some of the most common concerns I see in Women include:

  • Leaking when coughing, sneezing, laughing or exercising
  • A feeling of urgency or difficulty making it to the toilet in time
  • A sense of heaviness or dragging, often related to prolapse
  • Discomfort during sex
  • Pain in the lower back, hips or pelvis
  • Diastasis recti (tummy gap) after childbirth
  • Recovery after caesarean section or perineal trauma

My role is to make sure you are heard, understood and properly assessed. You will never be rushed, and everything is explained clearly. We work together to restore comfort and function, and support you with ongoing strategies for long term recovery.

For men: an overlooked area of health

Men often do not realise that they have a pelvic floor, let alone that it can cause pain and dysfunction. I regularly work with men recovering from prostate surgery, as well as those experiencing unexplained pelvic pain or changes in bladder or bowel control.

Common concerns include:

  • Urinary incontinence after prostate surgery
  • Persistent pelvic pain or discomfort
  • Pain in the penis, testicles, perineum or lower abdomen
  • Constipation or bowel urgency
  • Tension and overactivity in the pelvic floor muscles

These symptoms can be incredibly frustrating, especially if you have been told nothing can be done. With the right physiotherapy, symptoms can improve significantly. Assessment is gentle and thorough, and all treatment plans are tailored to you.

What makes our clinic different

I founded this clinic in Bishop’s Stortford to bring together everything I have learned over two decades. Here, you will find a physiotherapy service that is evidence based, personalised and focused on lasting recovery. We do not just hand out generic exercises or rely on passive treatment. We get to the root of the issue and guide you through each step of your recovery journey.

Pelvic floor physiotherapy is not one size fits all. Whether your muscles need strengthening, relaxing, or retraining, you will receive clear guidance and support from someone who specialises in this field. Our clinic is a safe, welcoming space where you can speak openly and get the help you need.

You do not have to live with it

Pelvic floor symptoms may be common, but that does not mean they are normal. If you are experiencing pain, leaking, pressure or anything that feels “not quite right”, you are not alone.

There is a lot we can do.
